The UIC organise the 2nd international drawing contest for children on safety at level crossings on the occasion of the International Level Crossing Awareness Day 2012 (ILCAD) to take place on 7 June. The competition is open to children everywhere (including those of UIC HQ colleagues and UIC members' staff) and are divided into two categories:

from 4 to 7 years old from 8 to 12 years old

Les dessins seront jugés à Paris, à la DG UIC et les résultats pour les meilleurs dessins seront communiqués fin mai 2012. Les meilleurs dessins seront bien entendu récompensés par un prix qui sera communiqué ultérieurement. Ils seront également téléchargés sur le site ILCAD www.ilcad.org avant la campagne internationale qui aura lieu le 7 juin 2012 et utilisés au cours de la campagne et dans des événements sur les passages à niveau.

Beurteilt werden die Zeichnungen in der UIC in Paris, die Auswahl der besten Zeichnungen erfolgt Ende Mai 2012. Die zu gewinnenden Preise werden zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt bekannt gegeben. Die Zeichnungen werden vor der internationalen Kampagne am 7. Juni 2012 auf der ILCAD-Webseite www.ilcad.org veröffentlicht und bei der Kampagne sowie Seminaren über Bahnübergänge gezeigt.

Los dibujos serán evaluados por un jurado en París en la DG UIC y los resultados serán comunicados a fines de mayo de 2012. Los mejores dibujos serán, por supuesto, recompensados con un premio que será comunicado ulteriormente. Asimismo, serán colgados en la página web de ILCAD www.ilcad.org antes de la campaña internacional que tendrá lugar el 7 de junio de 2012 y serán utilizados sea durante la campana o a la ocasión de eventos sobre pasos a nivel.

Chris Cairns Foundation New Zealand with Kiwirail support ILCAD: The Chris Cairns Foundation was initiated in 2006 by former New Zealand international cricketer Chris Cairns, whose sister Louise was killed whilst a passenger on board a train in 1993 when a cement truck failed to stop at a level crossing.

The purpose of this campaign is because, when compared to other rail operational statistics, too many people die or are injured in accidents at level crossings. These however are in the majority of cases due to misuse by motorists and pedestrians whilst the popular misconception is that these fatal accidents are a railway problem. Conferences on the issue show that the only really effective way to decrease the number of accidents, short of closing all level crossings, is education, highlighting the risks and making people aware of the potential consequences if they do not follow the simple rules of the road.

Running under the motto “Act safely at level crossings” the railway community, in conjunction with a small but rising number of road sector organisations and in conjunction with the European Commission and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), has established the ILCAD campaign to raise awareness among road users and pedestrians of the risks at level crossings and to change their behaviour. More than 40 countries around the world have been engaged again in ILCAD 2011. You can join free of charge as all activity is on a purely collaborative basis.

Building on the successes of the 2009 and 2010 campaigns, the ILCAD 2011 (International Level Crossing Awareness Day) focused on the principle date: 9 June 2011.

In addition the United Nations "Decade of action for road safety 2011-2020" has been officially launched on 11 May. UIC as the ILCAD coordinator has been granted permission to use the logo of their campaign in our communication actions on ILCAD as an event related to road safety.

So join us and help the railway community to reduce this level of operational risk that we face at the interface with the road sector.

LAST NEWS! 2nd UIC drawing contest for children on level crossing safety officially launched.

The UIC and the railway community, in conjunction with a rising number of road sector organisations, the European Commission and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), have established the ILCAD (International Level Crossing Awareness Day) campaign to raise awareness among road users and pedestrians of the risks at level crossings and to change their behaviour.

When compared to other rail operational statistics, too many people die or are injured in accidents at level crossings. These however are in the majority of cases due to misuse by motorists and pedestrians whilst the popular misconception is that these fatal accidents are a railway problem. Conferences on the issue show that the only really effective way to decrease the number of accidents, short of closing all level crossings, is education, highlighting the risks and making people aware of the potential consequences if they do not follow the simple rules of the road.

In 2011 more than 40 countries committed around the world, over 500 press articles were published and in several countries level crossings hit the headlines on prime time on television and radio.

In addition to the ILCAD website created in 2010 and hosted by UIC (around 17,000 connections) the UIC decided to use social networks more frequently in 2011: An ILCAD facebook page was launched (170 friends), as well as a twitter page on which all kind of information related to level crossing safety is being published: photos, videos, press articles, partners' actions. For Christmas a blog was created.

Building on the successes of the 2009, 2010 and 2011 campaigns, the ILCAD 2012 (International Level Crossing Awareness Day) will focus on the principle date: 7 June 2012 under a single logo and motto “Act safely at level crossings”. This motto exists now in more than 20 languages.

More and more countries around the world join our action. What about you ? You can join free of charge as all activity is on a purely collaborative basis.

So join us and help the railway community to reduce this level of operational risk that we face at the interface with the road sector.
